Criticizing my Criticism

Recently upon returning home from my tour with Awol One, Factor, Ceschi and Cars & Trains of Fake Four Inc, I happened to stumble across a couple of show reviews that broke down my set. I've decided to share them with you because they are completely contrasting points of view and I find it entertaining to see the differences in what people observe when watching the same set.

I'm not against negative criticism, in fact I find it inspiring. It always boggles my mind how a negative comment can effect you so much more than a positive comment, not that positive comments aren't nice, but the comments that stick out and really rattle people are always the negatives (which is really the only reason there are critics to begin with). I can get off of stage, sell a bunch of merchandise get a ton of "you are awesome!" 's high fives and all, but one person says you suck and it has suddenly cracked your ego and left it to bleed out in a sulky "what the fuck is wrong with me?!" manner.

But this is what makes an artist an artist...sensitivity to criticism.

THE BAD

Now the first review I will share with you is the negative one brought to you by MyBackPackIsBiggerThanYours.blogspot.com (already sounds pretentious) which covers my show in San Francisco, CA.

"Abadawn was the opener, with DJ Zone backing him up behind the boards. I hadn't heard any of Abadawn's music previously, but had heard from a friend that he put on a good show and knew of him through his Camobear Records affiliation. Well, I'm not sure if this was just an off-night for Abadawn, but to put it bluntly: I thought he sucked! It seemed like he was trying way too hard to impress the crowd with his rapping and stage antics, and didn't have the skills or originality necessary to make anyone care. To make matters worse, he seemed very indecisive about what tracks he wanted to play, and frequently performed only a minute of a song before deciding to switch into another one. It seems like Abadawn's crazy frat-boy personality is what draws people to his music, but yelling into a microphone and kicking your shoes off on stage shouldn't be the summation of your performance. Bad set."

I actually love this review, it's probably the worst/best review I've gotten. First off, to say "I thought he sucked" is just bad diction for any journalist, be more creative! The next best part is to say I was trying "too hard to impress the crowd with...rapping and stage antics" No shit, that's what rappers do, try to impress people with their rapping. It is also hillarious that he says I "didn't have the skills or originality to make anyone care", when in reality it was the very beginning of the night, I was first up and there was a total of probably 10-12 people in the crowd at the time, also the fact that anyone who has seen my set knows that people tend to want to just watch, it's not exactly music to dance to, maybe mosh to when it's the right crowd.

Now for my favorite part!! "crazy frat-boy personality"...okay, anyone that knows me knows I am far from a "crazy frat-boy" nor do I convey that on-stage in person or at any other time. I just have a feeling dude really didn't "get" my set, and that's okay. I accept that not everybody gets it, what bothers me is that he is an underground hip hop head and out of anybody I would expect him to get it, but whatever. Good luck to you sir, perhaps I should send you a free CD for such a great write up. Maybe you should try making a living as a touring artist and have the guts to spill your face off every night for strangers some of which could give a fuck less what you are actually saying. It's not the easiest gig, but I'm not quitting anytime soon.

THE GOOD

And now, for my own bragging rights let's take a look at a positive review from my Seattle, WA show on the same tour courtesy of ThisIsChris.com

another excellent act that we got to see was Abadawn, a rapper with an extremely young countenance (he looked like he was 15) and a fascinating style. He had two vocalizations: a hip-hop voice that had inflections and flow that reminded me somewhat of Eminem, and a full-on death-metal screech/growl voice. He switched freely between them. Also, his songs were short, which I really appreciated (a couple were only like 45 seconds long, I swear). They were like a little nugget burst of energy, like a hip-hop haiku of rage.
I find the contrasts between these two hillarious, unlike MyBackPackIsBigger; ThisIsChris appreciates the fact that I perform short songs and am not actually indecisive about what to play but like to take a punk approach to performing and only give the crowd small doses of my music. Also, ThisIsChris recognized my high energy and rage, which MyBackPackIsBigger for some reason found as trying too hard. As they say, ya win some ya lose some.

In fact I will take into account everything the negative and positive blog said and keep doing what I do, nobody can stop that.

I guess the real reason I wanted to write this blog was to tell all of you to see the movie "Heckler". A brilliant documentary on hecklers and criticism in the entertainment industry. Anytime I'm faced with a heckler or a negative critic I always think back to various scenes in this movie that remind me I'm on the right path. Thanks to both Blog writers for even caring enough to mention me.

I'd like to share with everyone the new Pharoahe Monch video "Clap" this is the extended version that plays out as a short film that reminded me strongly of the police raid May of last year where a 7 year old girl was shot and killed while filming the A&E police reality show "The First 48". This video moved me intensely and resulted in a reflection of the current state of music.

In a world where Dr. Dre's new video of Eminem rapping him back to life has over 17 million views, Kanye West trying to cause seizures and dancing on a cop car has over 17 million views, and Tyler The Creator of Odd Future eating a cockroach and hanging himself has over 3 million views, I ask how can a video like this go unnoticed and unrepresented by major networks such as MTV and BET? Answer = money. The entire music industry is indeed on "that Donald Trump" shit like the homie Sole speaks on in his new video that can be seen HERE.

In this video we have Pharoahe speaking on a very real subject and providing us with the complete visual to see how real this situation is. So go ahead and blog about the Odd Future kids jumping off of speakers and roofs at SXSW into a sudden cult-following that resembles a juggalo audience without the face paint, but there's real shit going on in the world. Japan is in crisis, the US Westcoast faces a fatal earthquake, we are now at war with Libya, and that's only the tip of the iceberg in world events.

Happy Holla-days everybody!

In spirit of the holiday season I am presenting my entire solo back catalog for free download by clicking the "MUSIC" tab above!!!!

I have a few new projects in the works, it's been a long time since I've released material and I hope to prove it is for good reason. So I'm offering these past albums for free download as a way for you all to get familiar with (or remember) what I've managed to capsule in recording during my strange life. Hopefully you can understand and appreciate the difference you will hear in the new projects to come. New material hasn't been released yet because I don't feel it's ready. I've been in a growing process as an artist, trying new things and telling new stories, I knew from the beginning the new material was going to need time to come out right, but one thing I do promise is that it will come out.

SO go to "MUSIC" and download some of the old albums, this way you can remember how dope I used to be and trash on the new record when it comes out. whoop!

THE NEVER ENDER BENDER

A Recount of the spot date turned two-month tour

As an artist/musician/weirdo I have always prided myself on having friends and listeners all over the country, and even world for that matter. It has always been an amazement that what I do could reach across stretches of immense land and differences to find people that have a lot in common with my life, love and struggles. Given that, I would also like to bring up the fact that I've hardly done any traveling. A few short runs down the westcoast, a childhood visit to mexico, and a recent family stay in Texas, but when it comes to performing for people from other places I've rarely gotten the chance. Then came July.

I had been trying to book a small tour with fellow artist and now good friend JFK (of Grayskul/Oldominion) but contacts fell through and like countless tours before, it was looking like I was going nowhere. I had one show booked for San Francisco, being originally from Central California and having always thought SF was the coolest place to visit as a kid, I felt I had to do this show, regardless of it being a money loser or not. I was determined to make it to my San Fran show.A few days prior to the show my great friends and heroes The Chicharones were in the middle of their tour and since I was going to be in the area they agreed to let me get on a couple of shows of theirs. This was great, I love these guys and have played with them numerous times always to result in a great show. JFK was also joining them last minute on this tour so I was excited to see my filthy clan of pirates and pretty boys alike.

There's something about planes that I've always hated. I never felt like we as humans were supposed to be launched through the air at top speeds to our destination, but with expansion comes risks I suppose. This was my first time boarding a plan and being of drinking age, so I decided to hit the airport bar. WHOA! being drunk on an airplane is way better than not. Turbulence came and I was ready. I don't think I'll ever be afraid on a plane again, I'll just be trying to not urinate myself before the seat belt sign shuts off.Arriving in the bay area was thrilling. As it always is, so many people, such sprawl, such disdain, yet also hope and success. I had made it back to a place oh so familiar. I met up with my producer Level and got to spend some quality time discussing music and our upcoming works. The Jester King album is gonna rule, it's gonna be hard to top, but with Level on my side, it will be done.

What I've always loved about San Francisco, is how the entire bay area will be lit up with golden sun, yet you approach the bridge and there it is; a sweltering smog cloud illuminating the city in sulfur. Living now in the North West this was nothing too tough for me to adjust to, I am made of waste. The show went great, met a ton of wonderful people, had some drinks, and made way to my next destination.

In Nevada City I would meet Los Chicharones, I have a cousin in the city and had been there before and new if the nightlife was anything like their river life, this would be a good time, and it was. Show was packed, and I was back with familiar friends. The Chicharones at this point had already been on the road for about three weeks, and were getting a little beat up at this point. It was great to see the immediate switch in morale when I showed up and hugs were exchanged. The caravan had gained one, for how long? who knows. For I was told just a few days.

So here we are moving to Southern California, we played Palm Springs for a great crowd, met more amazing people (big ups to the Grimm Image camp), spotted Jack Black buying ice cream at a TCBY, and left the city in a trail of awesomeness. It was time for Arizona.

For those of you that don't know, I'm a skinny pale white kid. I've been between Washington and Oregon for years now, and the slightest hint of sun turns me snarling and gasping like a vampire. The Arizona sun hit me hard like grease in a hot pan. I toughed it out though, and in fact the only part of me that got sunburned was my nose, leaving me looking very Rudolph-esque. Sexy.

All of the shows in Arizona were great, tons of cool people out there. Unfortunately the marijuana laws there are not very cool. Seriously, what the hell Arizona? it's pot. Anyways, I didn't get caught up with anything, however the driver of our caravan did get arrested. It was completely unfair, far too much detail to get into, but it did suck. However he is okay now, but from what he said, Arizona police are no joke, and getting hit with socks full of soap bars is neither fun nor productive. Probably my favorite part of Arizona was meeting a lot of people that already knew me. Like I said it is always mind blowing to see your work make it distances you've yet to travel. Amazing by far.

Moving on to New Mexico, I love New Mexico. Sleep of The Chicharones has a lot of good friends and family out there, the scenery is beautiful, and everybody at the shows were awesome. There was almost a stabbing at an after party one night, but I was completely uninvolved. I try to stay away from stabbing, but who knows. It may have to happen one day.

The next batch of shows was in the lovely Colorado. I have never been to the state, but I have always heard that it is beautiful, and yes it is. The most beautiful yet terrifying drives I have ever been on. Those mountain passes are nothing to laugh at, I was staring death in the face and he was without guard rails on a giant cliff. Got to kick it with the Bull*Headed and MadeUpMinds cats and had a good time. Whiskey is a hell of a drink. Can't get enough.

After a few more shows in New Mexico the three weeks was up, my couple day tour ended up going all the way to the rest. I was proud of myself, and I was glad my friends allowed me to stay. I am confident to say I gave my all in each performance, and amazingly never lost my voice. We bid farewell to the rest of the crew and it was homeward bound with The Chicharones band. On our way through the states our friend in Colorado knew we'd be coming through the area and booked us an impromptu show. We drove through the night, drank red bulls, watched the sun rise and finally, some 26 hours later we pulled back in to Portland. Clocking in with a mere 15,500 miles plus put on the rental. Not too shabby for some silly little kids.

Here I was finally at home, only not quite. Immediately had another show the night after, and then I received a call from some friends of mine (Midas Dutch) regarding a North West tour they recently booked. Turns out the headliner they had planned for wasn't going to make it and they needed a last minute fill in. Bam, back on tour. The shows were good, I had a great time seeing my friends in Washington and causing havoc on the beautiful peninsula.

Finally, a few more days home. A couple scattered Portland shows and then it was off again. Another week run to California, this time with my good friends Sarx & Name The Uncanny. This tour was booked on the whim and didn't look like it was going to happen, then some things came through and it looked like it would logistically work, and it did. We survived, we had good shows and met more amazing people.

Then it happened. In my silly whiskey binging in San Luis Obispo, we were too lazy to strap our stuff to the roof so we just crammed it all in the front seat and went to our destination. I decided I wouldn't bring my suitcase in, and then I must have left the door unlocked. It was very much to my horror when I came outside the next day to not see a suitcase. My everything was in there, merchandise, clothing, toothbrush. Everything. That merchandise was my means to make money to eat. But oh well, the show must go on. I brushed it off with a "that sucks" and we went on our way, trailblazers.

We ended the run in Vallejo, CA. Now when I was told we were playing Vallejo, I was a bit nervous. "We're playing Vallejo?....which exit? Central? uh oh" However it ended up being up in a suburban cut I don't think most people know exists in Vallejo. So I was wrong, we rocked the party and everyone had a great time.

After 10 hours in the car today, all I can say is when is the next one? I feel at home on the road, like it's my natural environment. I survive my regular life on the bare necessities, take me out there and I flourish. Although I miss it I am glad to be home, take some downtime to get this album done and ready for your listening. Then the mission is to go even further, more places and people I have yet to see. Oh the delight of the never ending bender.

After unexpectedly joining The Chicharones on half of their 6 week tour. I have made it safe and sound back into the Northwest. I can't wait to hit Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and California again, but for now it's good to be back. If you're in the Northwest try to catch one of these homecoming shows. I'll be in Port Townsend on Saturday 8/21 and Seattle on Monday 8/23. I will then return to Portland and round it off with The Chicharones at Berbati's Pan on 8/26. I will be posting more on how the tour went later, until then, au revoir.

I will be performing at Club Six in San Francisco, CA on Friday, July 23rd 2010. This is exciting because besides shows in Portland I feel like I'm hardly ever getting out of the house these days. This is good though, the next night I will be meeting my good little buddies The Chicharones in Nevada City, CA at Coopers Ale House and might just rock a little set with em. Either way it'll be good to get down to California for a couple days. After too many recent failed attempts of booking tours with other people, I've decided this next go round I'm just gonna book the whole thing for myself and go it alone, maybe bring the band. It has been two years since my last solo release. It's been a crazy ride, from leaving all behind in Seattle to coming to live my dream in Portland, OR; to losing an album and a half's worth of material on a crashed hard drive. Either way I've grown a lot, experienced tons, and have seen a definite shift in the way I approach music. My new album is nearing completion, I'm not going to title it or set a date yet, because who knows what could happen, but it's coming and it's leaps beyond what I've done in the past. I am also very proud of the features I have rounded up on this one, as well as the production.

My good friend LEVEL has been handling a lot of production on the new record and recently out of inspiration remixed the Two Weeks instrumental by Grizzly Bear. (yeah, yeah, we're biters, but expect little to no samples on this new album). I being a fan of the song immediately started writing to it. The outcome was an almost 3 minute explanation of myself and where I'm at now as well as some reflection on my career thus far.
